Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2014-P 25c CO WDDO-001, this doubled die obverse was identified on the 2014 Philadelphia Great Sand Dunes National Park Quarter, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters program (2010-2021). As the primary DDO for this design, WDDO-001 typically represents the most prominent or earliest-discovered doubled die obverse variety for the date and design combination. The Great Sand Dunes reverse, designed by Don Everhart, depicts a father and son playing in the sand dunes with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the background and a medano creek in the foreground — Colorado's natural wonder featuring the tallest sand dunes in North America. John Flanagan's Washington portrait on the obverse provides the standard pickup areas for doubled die examination, including IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date, and the mintmark. No supplementary cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are currently known. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition weighing 5.67 grams at 24.3 mm diameter with a reeded edge, the 2014-P Great Sand Dunes Quarter was the fourth of five America the Beautiful releases that year. The America the Beautiful program produced 56 total designs across its 12-year run, creating an extensive field for variety researchers who systematically examine each design for hub doubling, repunched mintmarks, and other die varieties.
