Cataloged on the Lincoln Shield Cent introduced in 2010, 2012P-1DEO-011TREVERSE documents a trail die on the 2012-P cent where the obverse die left a partial impression on a planchet that was not yet fully positioned in the striking chamber. The "TREVERSE" designation in the catalog title indicates the trail die impression involves the reverse side of the coin—the partial ghost image from the trailing strike appears on or overlaps with the reverse design. Trail dies are a distinct category of striking anomaly: unlike doubled dies (which are created during die manufacture) or machine doubling (which results from die bounce), trail dies originate from planchet feed timing, making them mechanical process errors rather than die-making defects. The Shield Cent reverse, designed by Lyndall Bass, features a Union shield with a scroll bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM, and trail die impressions over this geometric design can produce visually complex overlapping patterns.
