2012 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2012 1c WDDO-008, this doubled die obverse on the 2012 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits strong extra thickness on the full word LIBERTY, with notching visible on the lower left portions of ERTY — a distinctive saw-tooth pattern created when the secondary hub impression lands slightly offset from the primary, producing alternating ridges along letter edges. Die markers on the obverse include a pre-die crack depression running southwest to northeast through the upper hair of Lincoln's portrait — an incipient fracture that has not yet fully developed into a raised die crack. On the reverse, a die crack extends along the top left side of the shield, a large die chip appears on the top of the shield north of LU in PLURIBUS, and another die chip sits on the shield north of the B in PLURIBUS. No supplementary cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The 2012 Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at Philadelphia in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc core with 2.5% copper plating) weighing 2.5 grams at 19 mm diameter with a plain edge. The Shield reverse design by Lyndall Bass, introduced in 2010, features 13 vertical stripes symbolizing the states united in support of the federal government, with the ONE CENT denomination and E PLURIBUS UNUM motto inscribed on a heraldic banner.
