Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under identifier 2012 1¢ WDDO-007, this Lincoln Shield cent displays strong extra thickness on LIBERTY — the kind of bold, easily visible doubling that makes a variety accessible to collectors beyond the specialized DDO community. Seven cataloged doubled die obverses for the 2012 cent reflects the continued intensity of variety research applied to the Lincoln cent even after the transition from the Memorial to the Shield reverse in 2010. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge, appearing as a dot south of the I in LIBERTY — a precise positional reference that allows confirmation of the specific die independent of the doubling diagnostic. The reverse carries three distinct markers: a die crack extending along the top left side of the shield, a small die chip on the top of the shield north of the P in PLURIBUS, and a large die chip on the top of the shield north of the R in PLURIBUS. The concentration of reverse markers around the upper shield area provides a diagnostic zone that can be examined quickly as a preliminary screening step before the more time-consuming magnified inspection of the obverse LIBERTY inscription. Lyndall Bass's Shield reverse design, introduced in 2010, presents a Union shield with horizontal and vertical stripes, a scroll bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM, and thirteen stars — design elements that develop die markers in patterns distinct from the earlier Memorial reverse. No cross-references to other attribution services have been established for WDDO-007.
