Description

Strong extra thickness on LIBERTY — especially prominent on the letters ERTY — distinguishes this 2012 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die obverse, with lighter extra thickness also visible on the date. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2012 1-cent WDDO-004 and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 2012P-1DO-003, this variety has an important catalog note: the original WDDO-006 was found to be a duplicate of WDDO-004 and was consolidated into this listing. Two die stages are documented. Stage A shows no significant die markers, representing the die in its early production life. Stage B exhibits a die gouge to the right of the upper G in GOD, with small die chips present between the G and O of GOD and between the D and W of WE — progressive die deterioration markers that help collectors determine which press run produced their specimen. The 2012 Shield Cent features the copper-plated zinc composition used since 1982 and Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010. The merger of WDDO-006 into WDDO-004 reflects the ongoing refinement of doubled die catalogs as researchers identify duplicate entries from different submissions. Reverse Stage A: A pre-die crack depression runs along the left top of the shield. Reverse Stage B: A die crack runs along the left top of the shield.
