2012 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Discovered by William Valentine, the 2012-P WDDR-006 Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible below the triangle above the center door and below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII tilted hub doubling results from the hub being slightly angled relative to the die during impression, creating localized displacement rather than the uniform spread seen in rotational classes. The obverse shows no noted markers, while the reverse provides two significant diagnostics: a die break on the left edge of the building and a series of slanted die scratches in the field extending from the left side of the dome. The die break at the building edge indicates structural failure had begun, and the slanted scratches from the dome provide directional reference points for attribution. The center door area of Monticello is a frequently affected zone for Class VIII doubling because the tilted hub angle creates maximum displacement at specific points on the building's architectural facade, making this a productive search location for Jefferson Nickel variety hunters.
