2012 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the Monticello building, and the word MONTICELLO marks this 2012 Jefferson Nickel as a significant doubled die reverse. The spread across both legend text and architectural detail confirms a hub-doubling event affecting a wide zone of the reverse die face, producing one of the more visually prominent DDR varieties on modern Jefferson coinage. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A represents the early die state, preserving the sharpest doubled elements before striking wear softens the surface. Stage B shows mid-die state characteristics, though confirmation remains pending. Stage C is the late die state, also awaiting confirmation, where fatigue may reduce doubling visibility. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, depicting Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, has appeared on the nickel since 1938 and provides abundant fine architectural lines — columns, windows, and roofline details — that amplify even moderate hub doubling into clearly detectable extra thickness. The DDR-001 designation identifies this as the primary cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2012 date, a benchmark variety for the issue.
