2012 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 2012-P 10c WDDO-001 with no other known cross-references, this 2012 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime carries the first documented Wexler doubled die obverse for the date, showing a southward spread on multiple obverse elements: the date, the P mintmark, the designer's initials JS, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY — with the spread on LIBERTY decreasing from left to right across the word, a characteristic signature of a pivoted hub doubling where the spread varies by distance from the pivot point. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge running northwest-to-southeast to the right of the lower second digit 2 in the date. On the reverse, a short die gouge can be found above the right dot flanking the E PLURIBUS UNUM inscription. The Roosevelt Dime has been struck continuously since 1946, and the 2012 Philadelphia issue was produced in substantial quantities for circulation. As the first documented WDDO for this date, the variety represents the initial cataloged hub doubling on the obverse, and the southward spread affecting so many design elements simultaneously — from the date at the bottom through the motto and LIBERTY above — indicates a comprehensive vertical shift between hub impressions that affected nearly the entire die face. The decreasing spread on LIBERTY from left to right provides an important diagnostic for confirming attribution.
