Description

Found by Cal Goodard, this Presidential Dollar trail die obverse is the Position B counterpart to the Position A variety, both struck from the same obverse die at the Philadelphia Mint on the 2011 Ulysses S. Grant design. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with a small die crack from the left brow into the field, another small die crack from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES into the field, and dimples from the bottom of the letters in JAMES GARFIELD; reverse at MDS with no additional markers. The JAMES GARFIELD dimples again indicate this obverse die received impressions from an adjacent Garfield die during handling. Struck in manganese brass clad at 8.1 grams and 26.5 mm, Position A and Position B refer to the edge-lettering orientation relative to the obverse, a distinction unique to Presidential Dollars where edge inscriptions replaced face inscriptions for date and mintmark.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die crack is seen from the left brow into the field. Another small die crack is seen from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES entering into the field. The obverse die does have “Dimples” from the bottom of the letters in the name JAMES GARFIELD.
  • Reverse is MDS – none noted.
