Description

This 2011-P silver medal is one of the official September 11 National Medals authorized by Congress to honor the victims and heroes of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The "P" mint mark indicates production at the Philadelphia Mint. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum Medal Act authorized the U.S. Mint to produce medals in recognition of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and aboard United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The silver composition reflects the solemn commemorative nature of this medal. Surcharges from sales were directed to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center site, making this both a collectible and a contribution to the permanent memorial.
