Description

The 2011 Fallen Heroes of 9/11 New York medal in 38mm bronze is a standard-size duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the first responders and civilians at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Authorized by Public Law 112-76, this smaller-format bronze reproduces the design of the gold presentation piece at the traditional 38mm diameter used for U.S. Mint medal duplicates. The obverse, adapted from Donna Weaver's design as sculpted by Charles Vickers, renders the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center against the lower Manhattan skyline at reduced scale. The inscriptions FALLEN HEROES OF 9/11 and SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 frame the scene, identifying this as the medal honoring those who were killed in the collapse of the towers and the heroic responders who entered the buildings to rescue survivors. The reverse carries Don Everhart's shared commemorative design featuring a shield bearing the emblems of the NYPD, FDNY, Port Authority Police, and emergency medical services, encircled by an oak wreath with ACT OF CONGRESS 2011. The New York City medal recognizes the largest single loss of emergency responders in American history β€” 343 firefighters, 23 New York City police officers, and 37 Port Authority officers perished that morning, along with nearly 2,600 civilians in and around the World Trade Center complex. The 38mm bronze duplicate allowed the Mint to make this tribute accessible to the broadest possible public, continuing the longstanding tradition of issuing bronze replicas of Congressional Gold Medals for purchase by citizens who wish to hold a physical reminder of the nation's collective recognition.

Rarity Notes
