Description

The 2011 Fallen Heroes of 9/11 Pentagon medal in 76mm bronze is a three-inch duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the military personnel, civilian employees, and first responders at the Pentagon during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. American Airlines Flight 77 struck the western face of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m., killing 184 people inside the building and aboard the aircraft. The Congressional Gold Medal was authorized under Public Law 112-76 to recognize the courage of those who perished and those who risked their lives in the rescue and recovery operations that followed. The obverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, presents a frontal view of the Pentagon building with its distinctive five-sided architecture rendered from an elevated perspective. The inscription FALLEN HEROES OF 9/11 arcs above the structure, with SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 below and THE PENTAGON identifying the specific location of the attack. The reverse, designed by Don Everhart, mirrors the commemorative theme shared across the three 9/11 Congressional Gold Medals, featuring a protective shield bearing the emblems of the responding agencies encircled by an oak wreath with ACT OF CONGRESS 2011 around the border. This 76mm bronze duplicate reproduces the Congressional Gold Medal at a scale that preserves the full architectural detail of Joel Iskowitz's Pentagon rendering, including the wedge-shaped renovation area where the aircraft struck. The Pentagon was the first of the three 9/11 sites to complete its recovery operations, with the damaged section rebuilt and rededicated exactly one year after the attack.

Rarity Notes

Produced by the U.S. Mint for public sale without a fixed mintage cap. The 76mm format is the larger duplicate size. Exact production figures were not separately reported.
