Description
The 2011 Fallen Heroes of 9/11 Flight 93 medal in 38mm bronze is a standard-size duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the forty passengers and crew members of United Airlines Flight 93 who gave their lives over Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. This 38mm format, authorized alongside the 76mm version under Public Law 112-76, makes the congressional tribute available at the traditional U.S. Mint bronze duplicate size. The obverse reproduces Joel Iskowitz's design of the Flight 93 National Memorial as sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, featuring the Tower of Voices memorial rendered at the compact 38mm scale. The inscriptions FALLEN HEROES OF 9/11, SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, and FLIGHT 93 identify this as the medal honoring the collective action of passengers who stormed the cockpit to prevent the hijacked aircraft from reaching Washington, D.C. The reverse carries Don Everhart's unified design of a shield encircled by an oak wreath with ACT OF CONGRESS 2011, consistent across all three 9/11 medal issues. Flight 93 is remembered as the only one of the four hijacked aircraft on September 11 where the passengers and crew directly intervened to prevent the intended attack. Among the forty who died were businesspeople, students, retirees, and flight crew members whose coordinated action in the final minutes of the flight — organized through phone calls with loved ones on the ground — represented an unprecedented instance of civilian resistance to an act of war in progress. The Congressional Gold Medal and its bronze duplicates stand as the nation's highest civilian honor for their sacrifice.
