Description

The 2011 Fallen Heroes of 9/11 New York medal in 76mm bronze is a three-inch duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal authorized by Public Law 112-76, signed by President Obama on December 18, 2011, to honor the heroism of first responders and civilians at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Congress awarded the original gold medal collectively to the New York City Police Department, the Fire Department of the City of New York, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, and the emergency medical personnel and other first responders who rushed toward the collapsing towers that morning. The obverse, designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Charles Vickers, depicts the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center standing against the Manhattan skyline with their distinctive vertical aluminum cladding rendered in meticulous detail. Above the towers appears the inscription FALLEN HEROES OF 9/11, with the date SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 below. The reverse, designed by Don Everhart, features a shield bearing the emblems of the various agencies that responded to the attacks, surrounded by an oak wreath symbolizing civic virtue and strength. The inscriptions ACT OF CONGRESS 2011 and the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM encircle the central design. At 76 millimeters in diameter, this is the larger of the two bronze duplicate sizes produced by the United States Mint. The three-inch format allows the intricate architectural and heraldic details of the original Congressional Gold Medal to be appreciated at a size approaching the gold presentation piece itself. These bronze duplicates were sold directly by the Mint to the public, allowing ordinary citizens to own a tangible connection to the congressional tribute.

Rarity Notes

Produced by the U.S. Mint for public sale without a fixed mintage cap. The 76mm (3-inch) format is the larger and less commonly encountered of the two bronze duplicate sizes. Exact production figures were not separately reported by the Mint.
