2010 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Documented by the Wexler Team as 2010 1-cent WDDR-002, this Lincoln Shield Cent variety reveals extra thickness on the designer's initials JFM — the monogram of Joseph F. Menna, the sculptor-engraver who sculpted the Union Shield reverse designed by Lyndall Bass. Both sets of initials appear on the reverse: LB for Bass as designer and JFM for Menna as sculptor, and it is Menna's initials that carry the doubling. The fine strokes of the JFM letters make even slight hub displacement produce detectable broadening, as the thin lines amplify any secondary impression. Pre-die crack depressions running along the top left of the shield serve as the reverse die marker — early-stage stress fractures in the die steel that appear as shallow raised lines on struck coins, indicating the die was developing cracks but had not yet fractured fully. No significant obverse markers have been noted. The 2010 Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc, carrying Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait. Examine the JFM initials under 10x magnification for broadened strokes, and trace the pre-die crack depressions along the shield's upper left for die confirmation.
