2010 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Allen Darrow attributed this Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the 2010-P Jefferson nickel, where the hub tilt produces visible displacement below the upper portion of the center door frame on Monticello, directly above the steps. This variety shows Class VIII doubling on the Return to Monticello reverse, which has paired Felix Schlag's restored Monticello with Jamie Franki's obverse portrait since 2006. The obverse carries a distinctive die dot on Jefferson's cheek to the right of his ear, while the reverse shows two small die dots to the upper right of the E in FIVE and a single small die dot to the lower left of the O in OF. Philadelphia's 2010 nickel production of approximately 260 million pieces was a moderate output year, and Darrow's discovery of Class VIII doubling on this date aligns with a pattern seen across multiple years of the Return to Monticello series, where the architectural door frame geometry consistently reveals hub tilt. The Monticello design's straight horizontal and vertical lines in the door frame area serve as natural reference grids that make even slight tilting visible.
