Description

Found in a Silver Proof Set, the 2009-S Lincoln Bicentennial Cent DDR-002 is tracked by VarietyVista under UVC-2678 with DMR-003. This variety exhibits a medium spread and light hubbing to the north that manifests as an extra index finger — a visually arresting presentation where the doubling creates the illusion of an additional finger on the young Lincoln depicted in one of the four 2009 bicentennial reverse designs. VarietyVista notes that the spread is slightly stronger than on DDR-001. Three die stages are cataloged: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State; Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial program celebrated the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth with four unique reverse designs representing stages of his life: Birth and Early Childhood in Kentucky, Formative Years in Indiana, Professional Life in Illinois, and Presidency in Washington. The DDR-002, found specifically in a Silver Proof Set, was struck at San Francisco on special 95% copper, 5% tin-and-zinc planchets using proof dies, distinguishing it from the business-strike satin finish cents produced for mint sets and the standard zinc cents made for circulation. The "extra finger" effect created by the northward hub doubling makes this variety particularly memorable and visually distinctive compared to most doubled dies that affect only lettering.
