2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-2785 and DMR-003, this 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent DDR-001 displays extra thickness on the upper and lower left windows numbered 3, 4, 5, and 6 from the left on the Professional Life in Illinois reverse design — a hub displacement concentrated on the architectural window elements of the Old State Capitol building depicted on this commemorative reverse. Four die stages are documented: Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B shows the reverse in early-mid die state (EMDS) with die cracks on the forehead and a die crack in the back of the hair — progressive obverse deterioration developing while the reverse was still relatively fresh; Stage C is mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed); and Stage D is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). As DDR-001, this holds the primary catalog position for doubled die reverses on the Professional Life design, typically indicating either the first discovered or the most prominent variety for this reverse type. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent's Professional Life in Illinois reverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart, depicts Abraham Lincoln standing before the Old State Capitol in Springfield where he served in the Illinois legislature and delivered his famous "House Divided" speech. Struck in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the 2009 Bicentennial Cents featured four rotating reverse designs commemorating different periods of Lincoln's life. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait continued from the original 1909 design. The window doubling creates a visually accessible effect because the geometric regularity of the window frames provides clean reference edges against which extra thickness becomes apparent.
