Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2009-P $1 JT WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2009 Presidential dollar honoring John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States. Presidential dollars were struck in a manganese-brass clad composition weighing 8.1 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter and edge lettering that includes the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Philadelphia Mint produced these John Tyler dollars as part of the Presidential Dollar series that began in 2007, issuing four presidents per year in the order they served. The doubling on WDDR-001 is located at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the head and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty on the common reverse design created by Don Everhart. This placement requires careful examination, as the intersection point where the ray meets the arm creates a small area of design overlap that makes the doubling visible only with magnification. Obverse die markers are particularly detailed for this variety: a die scratch runs from the lower J to the O of JOHN, numerous die scratches extend northeast from the R of TYLER, and a die scratch runs from the lower 4 to the 1 in the presidential service date 1841. On the reverse, two parallel die scratches extend northeast from the lower right side of the fifth ray clockwise from the head. No cross-references to other attribution services have been established for this variety. The Presidential dollar series ran from 2007 through 2016 for circulation strikes and continued through 2020 for collector versions, and John Tyler's inclusion honored the president who assumed office after William Henry Harrison's death just 31 days into his term. Doubled die varieties on Presidential dollars are less commonly hunted than those on cents or nickels, making WDDR-001 a noteworthy addition to the Tyler dollar die variety census.
