Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009-P 25c SF DC WDDR-017, this doubled die reverse on the 2009-P District of Columbia Quarter belongs to the DC and US Territories Quarter program — the successor to the wildly popular 50 State Quarters that had concluded with Hawaii in 2008. In the Wexler designation, "SF" marks a satin finish coin and "DC" confirms the District of Columbia design featuring Duke Ellington seated at a piano with the inscription "Justice for All." Don Everhart sculpted this reverse honoring D.C.'s native son, and the musical and figurative design elements — Ellington's figure, the piano, and the lettering — provide varied textures against which hub doubling can register with different degrees of visibility. No additional cross-references or significant die markers have been recorded beyond the Wexler designation. The 2009 DC Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad at Philadelphia, and the Territories program (covering DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands) generated six designs rather than the customary five of the State Quarter years, slightly compressing the production window for each design and potentially increasing per-die stress levels.
