2009 (P) American Samoa Satin Finish Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Holding the WDDO-001 designation for the 2009 Philadelphia Mint American Samoa quarter, this variety documents a doubled die obverse on the DC and US Territories issue honoring the Pacific territory. American Samoa's quarter reverse depicts a kava bowl, coconut palm, a flywhisk, and a staff, while the obverse carries the standard Washington portrait with IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date as surfaces susceptible to hub doubling. Doubled die obverse varieties arise when the working hub impresses the die at a slightly different position during one of the multiple impressions required to fully sink the design, leaving secondary images that transfer to every coin struck from that die. This variety was cataloged by the Wexler team under the designation 2009-P 25¢ SF AS WDDO-001. As part of the six-coin 2009 DC and Territories program, the American Samoa quarter had a comparatively limited mintage, and die varieties on these lower-production issues hold particular interest for specialists assembling a comprehensive Territory quarter variety collection.
