2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as 2008-P $1 JQA WDDR-005 with no other known cross-references, this doubled die reverse appears on a 2008 Philadelphia Mint John Quincy Adams Presidential Dollar. The doubling manifests at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the Statue of Liberty's head and the right arm of the Statue — a precise location within the common reverse design shared by all Presidential Dollars. Obverse die markers are found within the presidential date inscription: a die gouge inside the lower portion of the numeral 2 in 1829 (the year Adams left office), and additional die gouges positioned east and northeast of the numeral 9. No significant reverse markers beyond the doubling have been recorded. The Presidential Dollar series, struck from 2007 through 2016 (with later issues produced only for collectors), featured a rotating obverse honoring each president in chronological order while sharing the common Statue of Liberty reverse designed by Don Everhart. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, was released in 2008 as part of the series' second year of production. The edge lettering format unique to Presidential Dollars — carrying the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM in incuse edge inscription — distinguished this series from all other modern U.S. coinage and created additional collecting variables. WDDR-005 documents one of several hub doubling events on the Statue of Liberty reverse that affected the fine detail of the torch rays and arm area, elements whose thin relief made them particularly susceptible to visible doubling from even minor hub-to-die misalignment.
