2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
ErrorDescription
This second catalog entry for the 2008-P $1 JQA WDDR-009 Presidential Dollar represents an alternate listing for the same John Quincy Adams doubled die reverse variety documented by the Wexler Team, where slight doubling appears on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of her robe. The shared Statue of Liberty reverse design used across all Presidential Dollar issues means that reverse doubled dies can appear on any president's coin — but the obverse die markers specific to this particular die pair tie it to the Adams issue. Those obverse markers include the same diagnostic set: a small die gouge north of the 6 in "6th," a small die gouge to the left of the P in PRESIDENT, and a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the 2 in 1825, with a reverse die gouge dot inside the lower N of UNITED. The Presidential Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese brass clad composition at 8.10 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter, uses edge lettering rather than face inscriptions for the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM — a design choice that moved traditional numismatic information to the edge and occasionally resulted in the famous "Godless Dollar" errors when edge lettering was omitted. Don Everhart designed the common Statue of Liberty reverse that appears on all issues in the series, and the slight doubling above Liberty's sleeve on this die represents a minor but catalogable hub displacement. The 2008 Denver Mint John Quincy Adams Dollar was part of the program's second year, which issued four presidential portraits. No cross-references to other classification systems beyond the Wexler designation are currently known, and the multiple catalog entries for this variety may reflect different die states or submission records within the documentation system.
