Description

Representing another distinct die from the John Quincy Adams Presidential Dollar production, this 2008 WDDR-011 doubled die reverse presents doubling at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the head of the Statue of Liberty and her right arm — a location where converging design elements provide multiple angular surfaces for revealing hub displacement. The ray-arm junction acts as a natural amplifier for doubling visibility because the two design elements meet at an acute angle, and even slight separation between primary and secondary impressions creates noticeable divergence at the intersection point. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge found below the O in JOHN and a small die gouge located above the dash between the service dates 1825 and 1829 — features within the obverse legend and date inscription area. Reverse markers comprise a short die scratch running northeast from the top right of the first S in STATES and a small die gouge dot positioned between the lower T and A in STATES. The Presidential Dollar series featured obverse portraits engraved by the U.S. Mint's sculptor-engravers, with each president receiving a unique portrait paired with Don Everhart's common Statue of Liberty reverse. The manganese brass clad composition (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel) produces a distinctive golden color, with the coin weighing 8.1 grams at a 26.5 mm diameter. Edge lettering replaced the traditional rim inscriptions, moving IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the date, and mintmark to the coin's edge. The John Quincy Adams dollar was the final of four presidential issues released in 2008, following George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson in the chronological sequence.
