2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

This Doubled Edge Lettering Overlap variant of the 2008 Andrew Jackson Presidential Dollar WDDR-003 represents a striking anomaly where the edge lettering was applied twice with visible overlap between impressions. The doubled die reverse itself shows slight doubling on the Statue of Liberty's right arm just above the robe sleeve and at the intersection of the second clockwise ray with the right arm. Edge lettering overlap occurred when coins passed through the edge-lettering station more than once or when the lettering collar shifted during application, resulting in doubled or overlapping inscriptions around the coin's edge. Andrew Jackson, America's seventh President serving 1829 to 1837, is depicted on the obverse. Die markers include a gouge northwest of the P in PRESIDENT and a small gouge to the right of the bottom of the 8 in 1829. The Wexler designation is 2008-P $1 AJ WDDR-003. The combination of a doubled die reverse with doubled edge lettering makes this a doubly interesting variety for specialists in the Presidential Dollar series.
