2008-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Fourth Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2008 Denver Mint New Mexico Statehood Quarter, WDDR-004 shows doubling on the lower right side of the second ray from the left in the rays pointing south on the Zia Sun symbol. The Zia Sun, a sacred symbol of the Zia Pueblo people, was selected as the central design element for New Mexico's reverse in the 50 State Quarters program, and its radiating rays — extending in four cardinal directions with four rays per group — provided multiple fine details susceptible to hub doubling during die preparation. The doubling on a single ray within the complex sixteen-ray arrangement demonstrates the localized nature of hub doubling, where slight positional differences between successive hub impressions produce visible separation only in specific areas of the design. Die markers for both obverse and reverse are listed as none significant, and no prior cross-references were known at the time of cataloging. Submitted by variety researcher Bob McCann and carrying the Wexler designation 2008-D 25c NM SF WDDR-004, the "SF" in the designation denotes the Statehood Finishing variety numbering convention. New Mexico was the 47th state commemorated in the program that ran from 1999 through 2008, issuing five new reverse designs each year.
