2008-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2008-D 25c NM WDDR-006, this doubled die reverse was struck at the Denver Mint on the 2008 New Mexico State Quarter. New Mexico's reverse design features the Zia sun symbol — a sacred emblem of the Zia Pueblo people that also appears on the state flag — set against a topographic outline of the state with the inscription "Land of Enchantment." Die hubbing misalignment during manufacturing produced visible doubling on the reverse, creating a collectible variety from an already distinctive quarter design. New Mexico entered the 50 State Quarters program as the forty-seventh issue in 2008, the penultimate year of the original series. Denver Mint production of State Quarters involved high-speed presses capable of hundreds of strikes per minute, and the mechanical forces meant that even minor hubbing inconsistencies could produce attributable varieties. The sixth documented doubled die reverse for the 2008-D New Mexico quarter, this variety belongs to the State Quarters 1999-2008 series.
