2008 (D) New Mexico State Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2008-D 25c NM WDDR-006, this doubled die reverse was struck at the Denver Mint on the 2008 New Mexico State Quarter. New Mexico's reverse design features the Zia sun symbol — a sacred emblem of the Zia Pueblo people that also appears on the state flag — set against a topographic outline of the state with the inscription "Land of Enchantment." Die hubbing misalignment during manufacturing produced visible doubling on the reverse, creating a collectible variety from an already distinctive quarter design. New Mexico entered the 50 State Quarters program as the forty-seventh issue in 2008, the final year of the original series. Denver Mint production of State Quarters involved high-speed presses capable of hundreds of strikes per minute, and the mechanical forces meant that even minor hubbing inconsistencies could produce attributable varieties. A doubled die reverse for the 2008-D New Mexico quarter, this variety belongs to the State Quarters 1999-2008 series.
