Description

Appearing on the satin finish variant found in 2008 uncirculated Mint sets, this third cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2008-D New Mexico State Quarter shows strong doubling to the northeast on the Zia Pueblo sun symbol — the central design element of the reverse. The doubled impression creates an extra partial upright and a duplicated bottom curve on the lower left upright of the Zia symbol, a sacred emblem of the Zia Pueblo people that also graces New Mexico's state flag. The Zia sun with its four groups of rays radiating from a central circle made this quarter one of the most geometrically distinctive in the 50 State Quarters Program, and its angular lines proved susceptible to hub doubling. Die markers under UVC-1863 and DMR-005 document three stages from early die state through mid-die state and late die state (both unconfirmed). Satin finish coins from 2005 to 2010 received a burnishing treatment producing a soft, matte-like surface distinct from business strikes, and their limited Mint set distribution makes satin finish varieties inherently scarcer. Denver struck this alongside standard business strikes, and VarietyVista provided die stage documentation.
