Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as the primary doubled die reverse for the 2008-D New Mexico State Quarter, DDR-001 exhibits very strong spread in the southeast direction, visible as an extra partial loop on the lower left upright of the Zia Pueblo sun symbol — the central design element of New Mexico's state quarter. The Zia sun symbol, sacred to the Zia people of New Mexico, features four groups of rays emanating from a central circle, and the doubling at the base of one upright creates a distinctly visible secondary outline. Technical attribution data includes UVC-1777 and DMR-003, with three die stages: Stage A showing both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), Stage B progressing to Mid Die State (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C reaching Late Die State (LDS, unconfirmed). The Satin Finish designation indicates this variety is found on coins produced for 2008 United States Mint Sets, which received the distinctive satin surface treatment applied to Mint Set coins from 2005 through 2010. This limits the population to specimens distributed through official Mint Set sales rather than general circulation. New Mexico was the 47th state honored in the 50 State Quarters program, appearing in 2008 as the program approached its conclusion.
