Description
The 2008 (D) New Mexico Satin Finish State Quarter is a special strike quarter struck at the Denver Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Denver Mint struck 745,464 satin-finish New Mexico quarters dated 2008. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features the ancient Zia sun symbol superimposed over a topographical outline of the state and the inscription "Land of Enchantment." The Zia symbol's four groups of four rays represent the four directions, seasons, periods of the day, and stages of life. The 2008 quarters honored, in release order, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii. Final year of the 50 State Quarters Program. The DC and Territories program followed in 2009. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Auction record: $282 SP69 12-27-2016 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #394888.
