Description

Tenth doubled die reverse attributed to the 2008 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-010 belongs to the final year of Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse design, which would be replaced in 2009 by the four Bicentennial reverses commemorating Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. The Memorial reverse, with its twelve columns and architectural details of the Lincoln Memorial building, had been in continuous production since 1959, providing variety researchers with a deeply familiar design where hub doubling on columns, steps, and lettering could be precisely localized. Ten DDRs cataloged for the 2008-D date reflects the continued generation of hub doubling events even in the Memorial design's fiftieth and final year. Denver struck approximately 2.85 billion cents in 2008, an enormous output that consumed vast quantities of working dies and generated proportionally numerous hub misalignment events during die manufacture.
