2008-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Slight doubling appears on the lower right side of the sixth column to the left of the statue's upper legs on this ninth doubled die reverse for the 2008 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2008-D 1-cent WDDR-009. Die markers on the reverse include a small die gouge touching the right Memorial base below the F in the designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro) and a small die gouge to the left of the T in CENT. No significant obverse markers were noted. The doubling location — on the sixth column near the seated Lincoln statue — places it in one of the most intricate areas of the Memorial reverse, where the tiny architectural details of the columns, statue, and interior structure demand magnification for proper examination. The 2008-D was the final Denver Mint cent to carry the Memorial reverse design, which concluded after forty-nine years of continuous use. The small die gouges near Gasparro's initials and the word CENT provide reliable secondary attribution markers that complement the primary doubling diagnostic, allowing confident identification even on well-circulated specimens where the subtle column doubling might be partially worn.
