2008-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-2858 and DMR-003, the 2008-D Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-001 holds the primary doubled die reverse catalog position for this date-mint, displaying medium spread with light hubbing directed west that manifests as an extra column number 7 visible from the elbow to the foot of the seated Lincoln statue inside the Memorial. The dual characterization — medium spread but light hubbing — indicates that while the displacement magnitude is moderate, the secondary hub impression was relatively shallow, producing doubled outlines that are clearly positioned but less deeply struck than typical medium-spread varieties. Three die stages are documented: Stage A places both reverse and obverse in early die state, Stage B shows die chips on columns 1 and 2 with the obverse in early-to-mid die state, and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The die chips on columns 1 and 2 in Stage B provide clear die progression markers that develop after the initial EDS condition. The extra 7th column from elbow to foot creates a vertical doubled line adjacent to the Lincoln statue that is one of the more visually accessible Memorial Cent reverse doubled die features. The 2008-D was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19 mm diameter — the final year of the Memorial reverse design at Denver before the 2009 Bicentennial program. Frank Gasparro's 49-year Memorial reverse concluded its run with this and the 2008-P as the last regular-issue Memorial Cents, giving DDR-001 historical significance as the primary documented reverse variety for the design's Denver Mint farewell.
