2007 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-039
Error
Description
Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-1788 and DMR-042, this 2007 State Quarter DDR-039 shows light spread on the mane under the saddle horn — a localized doubling feature on the Montana State Quarter's reverse design depicting a bison skull over a landscape of mountains, rivers, and plains with the state motto "Big Sky Country." The doubling's location beneath the saddle horn places it within the detailed bison skull artwork where subtle displacement of the mane's fine lines becomes visible under magnification. Three die stages document the die's progression: Stage A with the reverse in EDS and obverse in early-to-mid die state (EMDS), Stage B with a die chip and depression at the top of Washington's hat at EMDS and a die crack running from the bust to the rim through the Q of QUARTER at MDS, and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The Stage B die crack through Q of QUARTER is a particularly useful diagnostic marker because it provides an obverse attribution point independent of the reverse doubling, enabling confirmation of the correct die pair without examining the subtle mane doubling. The Montana State Quarter, part of the 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008), was struck in copper-nickel clad composition weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The reverse was designed by Don Everhart. The obverse features John Flanagan's Washington portrait. The mane-under-saddle-horn doubling represents the kind of localized variety that rewards careful examination of State Quarter reverse designs, where each state's unique imagery provides different surfaces and textures for hub displacement to manifest.
