2007 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
Error
Description
Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2007-P $1 GW WDDR-011, this George Washington Presidential Dollar reverse die records hub doubling at the intersection of the 2nd ray clockwise from the head and the right arm on the Statue of Liberty design. The Statue of Liberty reverse, used as the common reverse for all Presidential Dollar coins throughout the series, was designed by Don Everhart and features Lady Liberty holding her torch aloft with radiating rays of light — and the junction where the 2nd clockwise ray meets her right arm creates a convergence of angled lines particularly suited to revealing hub displacement. Andrew Miller submitted this variety, which was documented in Early Die State on both obverse and reverse. The reverse carries a diagnostic die scratch running from WNW to ESE above the right side of the U in UNITED — a linear die preparation mark whose specific orientation and position above the U serves as the primary attribution fingerprint for this working die. The directional description of the die scratch (WNW to ESE) provides collectors with a precise angle to look for when verifying attribution, as the scratch's consistent orientation should be observable regardless of die state progression. Presidential Dollars were struck on manganese-brass clad planchets (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel) at 8.1 grams, with edge lettering carrying the date and mintmark — a format unique to this series that freed both obverse and reverse surfaces for design elements. The George Washington dollar inaugurated the Presidential series in 2007, and the Philadelphia Mint's substantial production volume created numerous working dies, each potentially carrying distinct die markers and varieties.
