2007 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Cataloged as 2007-P $1 GW WDDR-003 in the Wexler files, this George Washington Presidential Dollar exhibits doubling at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the head and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty on the reverse — a highly localized manifestation of hub doubling where the displacement between hub impressions produced visible duplication at only one specific junction point within the Statue of Liberty design. Obverse die markers include a die gouge below the 7 in 1789 and a die gouge below and between the 8 and 9 of 1789, both positioned within the presidential service dates flanking the portrait. Reverse die markers include a die gouge to the right of the center of the second A in AMERICA, a horizontal die scratch above the right side of the second S in STATES, and a die scratch running east from the top right of the second S in STATES. No additional cross-references are currently known. The Presidential Dollar series, authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, launched in 2007 with George Washington as the first issue. The reverse Statue of Liberty design, by Don Everhart, served as the common reverse for all Presidential Dollars. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese brass composition (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel) with a distinctive golden color, each coin weighs 8.10 grams with a diameter of 26.50 mm and features edge-incused inscriptions including the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The localized nature of the doubling at a single ray-arm intersection demonstrates how hub displacement vectors can produce visible effects at specific design junctions where overlapping elements create enhanced sensitivity to even minor misalignment.
