2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-042

Description

Reaching sequence number 042 in the catalog of 2006 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die obverses, WDDO-042 shows notching on the upper portions of ERTY in LIBERTY. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the variety has been documented across two die stages (Stage A and Stage B for both obverse and reverse), tracking the progression of die deterioration as the working die continued in service. The notching pattern on ERTY — where individual serifs and terminals of the letters show doubled impressions — is characteristic of moderate hub doubling that produces visible but not dramatic displacement. Forty-two doubled die obverses from a single date and mint represents one of the higher counts in the Lincoln Memorial series, a product of Philadelphia's massive cent output and the systematic examination of modern coinage by die variety researchers. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets, the 2006 cent belongs to the late Memorial era. The two-stage documentation allows collectors to compare early and late impressions from the same die. Extra thickness shows on the digits of the date. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A short die scratch extends from the rim just left of the U in TRUST. A die crack runs NNW from Lincoln’s eyebrow. Reverse Stage A: A pre-die chip depression shows at the top of the first Memorial bay. Reverse Stage B: A large die chip now shows at the top of the first Memorial bay.
