2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-040

Description

Fortieth in the doubled die obverse catalog for the 2006 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, this variety displays extra thickness on LIBERTY with notches on the upper left of ERTY, the lower hair and beard details, and the date. The notching effect on the upper left portions of the letters indicates the doubling direction and provides a tactile as well as visual diagnostic characteristic under magnification. Die markers further identify the specific die pair: on the obverse, a die scratch runs northwest-to-southeast through the upper right of the U in TRUST. The reverse carries two markers — a die gouge to the right of the lower N in CENT, and a strong die crack running down the left side of the E in CENT and continuing out to the rim. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2006 1¢ WDDO-040, this variety was struck during the final three years of the Memorial reverse design. The strong die crack on the reverse E of CENT indicates this die pair had accumulated significant stress, and collectors can use the crack's path from the letter to the rim as a confirming marker alongside the obverse doubling on LIBERTY, the hair, and the date.
