2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-038
ErrorDescription
Thirty-eighth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-038 shows light extra thickness on LIBERTY with visible notches on the upper left of ERTY — a diagnostic pattern where the doubled impression creates small indentations at the letter edges that collectors can detect under moderate magnification. The notching effect occurs when the shifted hub impression partially overlaps the primary letter outlines, removing material from the letter profiles rather than simply adding thickness. Multiple die markers support attribution across both sides of the coin: a small die gouge sits to the right of the bottom of the second T in TRUST on the obverse, while the reverse carries a die gouge dot to the left of the top of the E in EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM) and another die gouge dot at the top of the first Memorial column. No other cross-references are currently known beyond the Wexler listing. The 2006 date falls in the penultimate production era of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait obverse paired with Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, a combination that would end after 2008. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2006 1¢ WDDO-038, the 38th DDO for a single date illustrates the extraordinary density of variety documentation that decades of systematic Memorial Cent research have produced.
