2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-035

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2006 1-cent WDDO-035 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO designation (none known), this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays light extra thickness on LIBERTY with distinctive notches on the upper left portions of the letters ERTY. Unlike strong directional spreads, this extra thickness manifests as broadened letter strokes that give the affected characters a slightly bolder appearance than normal, with the notching effect creating small angular steps along the upper-left serif edges. Multiple obverse die markers confirm the specific working die: a small die gouge above the left side of the first T in TRUST, and a second small die gouge south of the U in TRUST. On the reverse, Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design carries its own confirmatory markers: a small die gouge just southwest of the bottom of the E in STATES and a small die gouge above the right Memorial base. The 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.50 grams on 19mm planchets — the composition adopted in 1982 to reduce production costs as copper prices rose. Examine LIBERTY under 10x magnification, focusing on the upper-left edges of E, R, T, and Y for the characteristic notching pattern.
