2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-031
Error
Description
Exhibiting strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with distinct notching on ERTY, along with doubling on the hair, beard, and date, WDDO-031 on the 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent ranks among the more prominent doubled die obverses for this date. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the variety also carries a die crack connecting the B and E in LIBERTY — a secondary die marker that aids attribution and indicates the die experienced stress beyond the initial hub doubling. Thirty-one doubled die obverses cataloged for a single date reflects the enormous Philadelphia Mint production volume and the intensity of modern die variety research. The 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck on copper-plated zinc planchets during the final years of Gasparro's Memorial reverse, which would be replaced after 2008. The combination of strong hub doubling and a diagnostic die crack makes WDDO-031 a relatively attributable variety, as the crack provides a second confirmation point beyond the doubling itself. A die crack runs north from the top of the ear to the W in WE. A die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the E in WE. Reverse: Two die chips can be found at the top of the first Memorial column.
