Description

Attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 2006 1¢ WDDO-029 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-028 in Billy G. Crawford's parallel attribution system, this Philadelphia-mint Lincoln Memorial Cent obverse displays light extra thickness on LIBERTY with distinctive notches on the upper left of the ERTY letters. The dual attribution — carrying both Wexler and Crawford catalog numbers — reflects the existence of multiple independent classification systems in die variety research, each maintaining its own methodology and numbering. Die markers help confirm identification: a die gouge appears to the left of the upper six in the date, die scratches run north-northeast from the upper lip, and additional die scratches run west-northwest to east-southeast above CE in CENT on the reverse. The 2006 Philadelphia cent belongs to the late Memorial era, with Frank Gasparro's reverse design in its 47th year of service. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, introduced in 1909, continued to anchor the obverse. Light extra thickness on LIBERTY is a common manifestation of subtle hub doubling, where the secondary impression closely overlaps the primary rather than producing widely separated images.
