Description

Strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with notches on the lower right of E, R, T, and Y makes this 2006 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die obverse one of the more visually accessible varieties for the date. The doubling extends to the lower hair and beard details of Lincoln's portrait, indicating a broad area of effect consistent with hub displacement during die preparation. The obverse carries a small die gouge at the rim midway between WE and TRUST. On the reverse, two die gouges serve as confirmation markers: one below the A in STATES and another touching the lower left side of the E in STATES. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2006 1c WDDO-028, twenty-eight documented doubled die obverses for a single date demonstrates the scale of variety discovery possible when millions of collectors examine billions of coins. The notching pattern on LIBERTY is a particularly diagnostic feature, as the consistent lower-right positioning across multiple letters confirms genuine hub doubling rather than mechanical doubling or die deterioration. The 2006 date was among the last three years of the Memorial reverse.
