Description

Light but diagnostic doubling on LIBERTY distinguishes this 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent variety, attributed as Wexler Variety ID 2006 1c WDDO-006. The extra thickness manifests with notching along the lower left of the letters ERTY, where the doubled hub impression left a subtle shelf visible under moderate magnification. Die markers confirm the specific die: two small die gouges appear lower left of Lincoln's shoulder on the obverse, with two die scratches running south-southwest from the lower back of the head. The reverse carries its own diagnostic — a horizontal die scratch passing through the lower 2nd, 3rd, and 4th bays of the Lincoln Memorial colonnade, the architectural reverse design that served the cent from 1959 through 2008. These bay-level scratches provide an attribution shortcut, since reverse die markers often survive circulation better than the obverse doubling itself. Memorial Cent doubled dies from the series' final years hold a particular niche among variety collectors, as the 2008 conclusion of the Memorial reverse makes each documented die from the late production run part of a closed and finite catalog.
