2006-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
Error
Description
Ninth doubled die reverse documented for the 2006 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-009 emerged during the penultimate years of Frank Gasparro's iconic Memorial reverse design, which would be replaced after the 2008 production year by the four-design 2009 Bicentennial set. Hub doubling on this variety resulted from misalignment during the multi-impression die sinking process at the die manufacturing facility, where the working hub carrying the Memorial reverse design shifted between passes. The 2006-D date represents a period of robust cent production at Denver, with the facility contributing billions of cents to annual coinage output. Nine cataloged DDRs for a single date and mint reflects both the enormous number of working dies consumed and the thoroughness of attributors who have examined surviving specimens over the past two decades. Each DDR preserves a unique fingerprint of hub displacement — the specific direction of spread, its magnitude, and which design elements show the most pronounced doubling vary from one to the next. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2006-D 1¢ WDDR-009, collectors should focus their examination on the Memorial columns, steps, and reverse lettering where hub doubling is most readily detected.
