Description

Doubling on the left side of the seventh Memorial column to the right of the statue, combined with an extra knee visible between the statue's knees, identifies this 2006 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. The extra knee is a particularly distinctive diagnostic, as the doubling created a second impression of the small Lincoln statue's knee area visible between the columns. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2006-D 1c WDDR-004, and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-002, Coppercoins 2006D-1DR-003, and CONECA 3-R-VIII. The CONECA Class VIII designation indicates tilted hub doubling as the mechanism. The quadruple cross-referencing across four major catalogs reflects the significance of this variety within the 2006-D date. The Lincoln Memorial's interior statue — a tiny representation of the Daniel Chester French sculpture — provides one of the most detail-rich areas on the Memorial reverse for detecting doubling, and the extra knee effect demonstrates how even minor die displacement can produce visible anomalies in this intricate design element. The 2006-D was among the penultimate years of the Memorial reverse before the 2009 Bicentennial program. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found at the statue’s left hand. An E/W die crack runs through the bottom of the BUS in PLURIBUS. Die chips can be found at the tops of the 1st and 2nd columns. A die crack runs NNE from the rim through to E in CENT.
