PC-25c-2005P-04R(WV) Pre-Cud

Description

Documented on the reverse of the 2005-P West Virginia State Quarter, PC-25c-2005P-04R(WV) records the fourth cataloged reverse pre-cud for this issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint. A pre-cud represents a die crack that has reached the rim but has not yet progressed to the point of displacing metal — the precursor stage before a full or retained cud develops. The crack's arrival at the rim is the critical threshold, because once the fracture connects the die face to the edge, the isolated fragment can begin to shift under striking pressure. West Virginia was the thirty-fifth state honored in the 50 State Quarters Program, released in 2005 alongside California, Minnesota, Kansas, and Oregon. The reverse design by John Mercanti depicts the New River Gorge Bridge, the longest steel-span bridge in the Western Hemisphere, set against a backdrop of Appalachian mountains.
