Description

Documented on the reverse of a 2005 Philadelphia Mint West Virginia State Quarter, this third pre-cud for the date captures the early-stage die rim crack that precedes a full cud formation. A pre-cud represents the critical intermediate stage in die failure: the rim has fractured, creating a visible crack line across the design, but the broken section has not yet separated from the die face. When that separation eventually occurs, the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce the raised featureless mass characteristic of a full cud. The "(WV)" designation identifies this as the West Virginia reverse within the 50 State Quarters program, which issued five unique reverse designs annually from 1999 through 2008. West Virginia's design featured the New River Gorge Bridge, and the die crack crosses the rim area of this distinctive reverse. The "R" suffix confirms the crack appeared on the reverse die rather than the obverse, which bore the standard John Flanagan Washington portrait shared across all state quarter issues. State Quarters were struck in enormous quantities at both Philadelphia and Denver, and the sheer volume of production accelerated die wear and rim stress. PC-25c-2005P-03R(WV) is cataloged by Cuds on Coins. Three pre-cuds documented for this specific date and design reflect the intensity of collector examination during the height of the State Quarters program's popularity.
