Description

Displaying strike doubling across the entire left half of the coin, the 2005 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel Bison reverse WDDR-080 documents machine doubling rather than hub doubling on this Westward Journey series issue. Strike doubling, also called machine or mechanical doubling, occurs during the striking process when the die shifts or bounces, producing flat shelf-like secondary impressions distinct from the rounded, raised images characteristic of true hub doubling. The Bison reverse, depicting an American Buffalo designed by Jamie Franki as part of the 2005 Westward Journey nickel program, features the animal in profile with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. The extensive coverage affecting the full left half indicates significant die movement during the striking event. While strike doubling is considered less numismatically significant than hub doubling because it results from press mechanics rather than die preparation, the broad extent across half the reverse surface makes this specimen notable for its coverage. The Westward Journey program's two 2005 designs, the Bison and Ocean in View reverses, replaced the traditional Monticello reverse for that year.
