2004 (P) Proof Lewis & Clark Dollar - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-VIII and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2004-P $1 Pr Lewis & Clark WDDR-001, this proof Modern Commemorative Dollar displays a doubled die reverse produced by Class VIII hub doubling — Tilted Hub Doubling in the CONECA classification system, where the working hub was angled relative to the working die during the secondary impression, creating a tilt-induced displacement pattern across the reverse design. Wexler puts the doubling where the pipe and the axe cross on the reverse, at the lower part of the crossing; the variety was submitted by Steven Bernatowicz, and no significant die markers are noted on either side. The 2004 Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar was authorized by Congress to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806). The proof version was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver composition. Modern commemorative dollars typically weigh 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter, following the traditional silver dollar specifications. Donna Weaver designed both sides: Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on the obverse, and on the reverse the Jefferson peace medal the expedition carried, with two feathers and 17 stars.
